Quran education in a small, spread-out country

New Zealand's Muslim communities are mostly in Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and Hamilton, with smaller groups in Dunedin, Palmerston North and other towns. The big centres have mosques and weekend classes, but many families live a long way from them, and in smaller towns there may be no Quran teacher at all.

Online one-to-one lessons remove that distance. A child can recite with a teacher who listens to every word and corrects it straight away, from a spare room in Nelson or Invercargill just as well as from a house in Auckland. There is no travel, no waiting list, and no sharing the teacher's time with a class.

The lessons suit adults too. Many students are parents who want to read the Quran properly alongside their children, people who recently embraced Islam, and professionals or students who learn at unusual hours.

Learning in New Zealand time

New Zealand is one of the first places in the world to start each day, and it is a long way ahead of most countries. That makes timing worth planning. We schedule every lesson in your own local time, so a 5 PM lesson is 5 PM on your clock, and we match you with a teacher who is available at that hour.

New Zealand uses NZST for most of the year and NZDT, one hour ahead, from late September to early April. The clocks change, but you do not need to track it: tell us the time you want and the lesson stays at that hour on your own clock.

Fitting Quran into the New Zealand school year

The school year has four terms, running from late January or early February to mid December, with two-week breaks between terms and a long summer holiday over Christmas and January. Our lessons are booked family by family, so you can add lessons during term breaks and the summer holiday, then step back during busy weeks like NCEA exams.

School generally finishes at around three o'clock, and many children then go to sport, music or other activities. We offer lessons at any time, 24/7. Most families choose after-school and evening slots from four until nine. We ask you to choose a time your child can keep each week. A fixed weekly slot is the single biggest factor in steady progress.

Many families also run a weekend routine around a community mosque or Islamic school. Private lessons are easy to add around those, and they do not replace them.

Ramadan and Eid in the southern hemisphere

Ramadan moves about ten or eleven days earlier each year, and because New Zealand is in the southern hemisphere, the seasons are the reverse of Europe and North America. When Ramadan falls in the New Zealand winter, days are short and fasting is easier; when it falls in summer, days are long. We adjust lessons to your household's rhythm and move times around Taraweeh when asked.

Eid is not a public holiday in New Zealand, so children often attend school on the morning of Eid or take the day off with a parent. We plan lessons around it so nobody has to choose between celebration and consistency.

Class times across New Zealand

Classes are available 24/7 in your own local time. The most popular slots are after school and into the evening. If you are in Auckland, a 5 PM lesson is 5 PM Auckland time, and the same goes in Wellington or Christchurch.

Online lessons alongside weekend Islamic school

Weekend Islamic schools and mosque classes are an important part of life for New Zealand Muslim families. Private online lessons are different, and they work well alongside them.

Teachers matched for New Zealand students

Each student chooses between a male and a female teacher, and you can ask for a different teacher if the first match is not right.

For New Zealand students we look for a teacher who explains clearly in English, who is comfortable teaching children with busy school and activity schedules, and who can teach at the local time that suits you, including after school and evenings. Teachers are certified and vetted with background checks, and class audio is recorded for quality assurance.

Your free trial is a real lesson with the teacher you would be learning with, so you can judge their teaching style before you commit to anything.

What your child can learn

Most beginners start with Noorani Qaida, which teaches the Arabic letters, their sounds and how they join. Students then move on to Quran reading with Tajweed, and those who want to memorise can begin Hifz. Islamic studies and Hadith classes are available too.

The plan is tailored to each student's age, level and speed, and parents receive a monthly progress report that shows exactly what has been covered.

  • Noorani Qaida for children and adults who are starting from the alphabet
  • Quran reading with Tajweed for fluent, accurate recitation
  • Hifz (memorisation) with revision around school and activities
  • Islamic studies for kids and Hadith classes

Questions from families in New Zealand

Do you teach in New Zealand time?
Yes. Lessons are scheduled in your own local time. Tell us the hour you want, and it stays the same on your clock.
How does daylight saving affect my lesson time?
It does not. Your lesson stays at the same hour on your clock, whether New Zealand is on NZST or NZDT.
Can we add lessons during school term breaks?
Yes. Many families add lessons in the two-week term breaks and over the long summer holiday, then drop back to their usual number once school returns. You can change your plan at any time.
We live outside the main cities. Can online lessons work for us?
Yes. All you need is a steady internet connection and a quiet space. Many families outside Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch use one-to-one lessons as their main Quran education.
How much do Quran classes cost in New Zealand dollars?
Plans run from 2 lessons a week to 5 lessons a week, all priced in NZD with no registration fee and no contract. The pricing table on this page shows current prices.
How do I pay from New Zealand?
Payment is by bank transfer. Prices are in New Zealand dollars, so no conversion is needed on your side.
Do online lessons replace weekend Islamic school?
They can replace it or sit alongside it. Many families keep weekend classes for community and add private lessons for fluent reading and Tajweed.
Can adults and new Muslims in New Zealand join?
Yes. Adults usually begin with Noorani Qaida and move on to reading with Tajweed. Lessons are one-to-one and private, so you can go at your own speed.
How do you keep children safe during online lessons?
Teachers are certified and background checked, and class audio is recorded and sessions are monitored for quality assurance (female students are monitored by female staff). For younger children we recommend a parent is nearby, and our support team is available whenever you have a question.
